Welcome to the Frisco Young Entrepreneurs Academy (YEA!)

“Start as a Student, Finish as a CEO”

The Frisco Young Entrepreneurs Academy (YEA!) is now accepting applications for the 2018-19 school year. The deadline for applications is Friday, September 14, 2018 at 5:00 PM.

The 33-week program takes motivated middle and high school students through the process of launching and running their own real businesses in a fun, exciting, hands-on projects-based approach while developing lifelong leadership skills.

Sponsored by the Frisco Chamber of Commerce in partnership with Frisco Independent School District and the Frisco Economic Development Corporation, the program offers dynamic guest speakers from the business community, as well as trips to local companies. Students develop professional skills, connect with local, legendary entrepreneurs, pitch to investors for start-up funding, launch their own real, legal businesses, and have the opportunity to participate in a national college scholarship competition.

Participants will work with mentors to identify their passions and transform their ideas into a fully formed business or social movement. Participants meet weekly at the Frisco ISD Career and Technical Education Center on Tuesday evenings starting at 4:30 PM.

Many YEA! graduates have continued to operate businesses they developed through the program even after they graduate high school and continue their education.

Applicants will be interviewed following the application deadline. For those students selected, student and parent orientation will be held in early October. The first class will be held in October, as well.

The Young Entrepreneurs Academy (YEA!), a nine-month program of the Frisco Chamber of Commerce, guides middle school and high school students through the process of starting a real business. YEA! Frisco teaches students not only the importance of social and business entrepreneurship, but also the process by which one establishes a business enterprise or social movement.

On Wednesday, April 5, 2017, 24 student CEOs presented pitches to an investor panel, in hopes of obtaining a portion of the $8,160 in funding available. The investor panel included Stefanie Wagoner, Director of Business Retention & Expansion, Frisco Economic Corporation; Krista Wadsworth, Community Impact Newspaper; Larry Harris, Director of Assest Management, Hall Financial Group; Bethani DeMaria, a senior at Frisco High School, CEO of Necessitation and last year’s YEA! Investor Panel winner; and Ron Corcoran, Senior Vice President of Lending, Texas Republic Bank. Brett Larson, Prudential Advisors, served as emcee for the evening.

All businesses were awarded funding based on their request and the decision of the panel with the overall winner being awarded the opportunity to compete in The YEA! Saunders Scholars Competition. This competition brings together the top student businesses from each YEA! class around the country to compete to win scholarship dollars and business start-up prize packages.

This year’s local competition winner, Gouzia Sivarajah, CEO and founder of SIINNO and a freshman at Heritage High School, received $1,644 in funding, and will advance to the regional competition in Rochester, NY. SIINNO is an LLC in the Safety and Technology Industry, dedicated towards creating technological devices that can help blind and visually impaired individuals travel safely.

The Frisco Chamber of Commerce was the first chamber of commerce in Texas to offer the Young Entrepreneurs Academy. YEA! was originally launched at the University of Rochester in 2004. With support from the Kauffman Foundation in 2008, YEA! spun off from the university level and was offered to local chambers of commerce to help bridge the gap between an area’s education and business communities. YEA! continues on a path of sustained growth, and is well on its way to making experiential entrepreneurship education available to students in each and every corner of our great country. With over 1,394 students enrolled within 57 program sites across 24 states in 2012, YEA! continues to empower each and every student across the nation to embrace their passion, live their dream, and change the world! Now, in our third year, the Frisco YEA! program is taking applications for motivated, engaged, and passionate students who live within the City of Frisco.
